Skills Assessment and Gap Training (SAGT)

This program helps construction workers with strong on-the-job experience and trade skills to receive the gap training they need to gain a qualification.

The SAGT program will help you turn your experience into a formal qualification. The program provides funding for those working in the industry – or looking to re-enter – who don’t hold a formal qualification. It allows eligible applicants to get subsidised Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and gap training to receive a nationally recognised Certificate III qualification.

Please note, qualifications awarded under this program in the building trades may not meet the requirements of a QBCC licence.

How the SAGT program works

Most of the SAGT units are achieved through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). You will need to show evidence of your work history and skills that you have performed over time in the workplace to prove you have the necessary skills for each unit. To be eligible for this funding, participants must be able to demonstrate RPL experience in at least 70% of the competencies required by the trade qualification. The remainder of the qualification is then made up by gap training. Our contracted RTOs will assess your existing skills and provide the training to fill any gaps – this is why we call it ‘gap training’.

Funding Conditions

Funding is available for a maximum of one qualification between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025, (an exception applies for waterproofing qualifications)
A minimum of 70% of the full qualification must be achieved through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Credit transfers from previous completed studies can be applied.
A minimum of two and a maximum of ten gap trained units is allowed
Complete your studies by 30 September 2025
